In excess of 20 Olympic medal winners, mentors and other world-class competitors have signed a statement calling for a stop to the death penalty of a boxing champion and trainer, who is sentenced to die in the country.

Increasing Global Anger

Amid growing international outrage over the country's expanding employment of capital punishment as a means of suppression, the strongly worded appeal censures the authorities's verdict to maintain the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northern province, was arrested for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and accused of backing an opposition group. He has spent half a decade in detention, where he has been tortured and confined in solitary confinement.

“Athletics is meant to promote faith, togetherness, and fortitude,” the endorsers stated. “The capital punishment of a winner for his political views is a blatant attack on these principles and a warning to all sportspeople who attempts to speak out.

Pattern of Executing Competitors

The appeal said that the athlete's circumstances was not unique and emphasized the country's record of putting to death athletes for their convictions, for example a national team leader, captain of the soccer squad, and a volleyball captain, skipper of the national women’s volleyball team. In 2020, an athlete, a young national wrestling champion, faced the death penalty.

Further signatories to the appeal comprise a yachting pioneer, who led the first women's squad in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to earn a prestigious nautical honor; the previous skipper of the national squad an athlete; and a footballer, who was in the Iranian squad for the 1978 World Cup.

Apprehension and Unjust Proceedings

The athlete was detained in March 2020. The charges against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through incendiarism and damage of public property”. His ruling has been annulled on two occasions but on October 4 it was confirmed on the latest review. His court case was condemned as “deeply biased” by rights defenders and groups.

Call to UN

The call to halt the athlete's capital punishment is subsequent to a earlier letter to the global human rights chief for human rights, signed by more than 100 advocates and organizations, calling for action to avert the sports figure's execution.

Capital Punishment Escalation

Based on reports, there is an “execution crisis in Iran, which has attained horrific proportions”. In 2023, authorities put to death at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a forty-eight percent increase on 2022. Last year, records showed nine hundred seventy-two deaths, representing the highest number since 2015. In excess of eight hundred people have been sentenced so far in the current year.

Dissidents and dissidents are focus, especially in the wake of the 2022 protests. Analysts say the government have utilized the capital punishment to suppress opposition, create fear among the public and reinforce their grip on rule.
