Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular calls from the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
